Ashfield is a suburb in Sydney’s inner west. It is located approximately 9 km south-west of the Sydney CBD and is part of the local government area of the municipality of Ashfield.
Description
Ashfield is a high density, multicultural suburb. It is often affectionately referred to by locals as “Little Shanghai”. The suburb has been established since the 1820s and there are several striking examples of Victorian architecture that represent the suburbs history. Ashfield is a mainly residential suburb but supports some industrial activity as well.
Facilities
Ashfield has three primary schools, one public high school and two Catholic high schools. Within very close proximity there are several other primary schools and a number of private and Catholic schools, including Trinity Grammar. A number of parks and reserves can be found in the suburb including Pratten Park which includes an oval and tennis courts. Cycling tracks can be found along the Cooks River in nearby Canterbury to the south and the Canterbury Park racecourse provides more open spaces for sporting, entertainment and leisure. Ashfield is home to The Sydney Private Hospital. For shopping, Ashfield mall contains grocery stores, specialty shops and department stores.
Industry and Employment
Although there is no extensive industrial activity in Ashfield, Sydney’s inner west is heavily involved in light industry such as in the nearby suburbs of Marrickville, Croydon and Burwood which are large employers of Ashfield residents. The close proximity of the suburb to the Sydney CBD means that it is a short commute by rail to the city for those employed in professional positions. Education is another large employer of Ashfield residents with the University of Sydney and Newington College in nearby Camperdown as well as a high number of primary and secondary schools in the area.

According to the 2006 Census, the population of Ashfield was 21,459.This represented a growth of 19% over the preceding five years.
