Location

 

Bondi Beach is located 7 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Waverley Council. Its neighbouring suburbs are Bondi, North Bondi and Bondi Junction.

 

 

Description

Bondi Beach is the surrounding suburb of one of Australia’s most famous beaches and the closest beach to the Sydney city centre. "Bondi" is derived from "Boondi" an aboriginal word meaning "water breaking over rocks". On June 9, 1882, Bondi Beach became a public beach. It remains one of Sydney's most iconic suburbs, with the kilometer long beach and surrounding shopping area one of Sydney’s most visited attractions. It can attract up to 40,000 visitors on a typical summer weekend. Its well established residential area remains a relatively quiet and highly sought-after precinct.  It was a working class suburb throughout most of the twentieth century. Notwithstanding the increasing gentrification of the area, Bondi Beach still remains a diverse community.

 

Facilities

The main commercial area of Bondi Beach is along Campbell Parade and adjacent side streets. It features many popular cafes, restaurants and hotels. The Bondi Pavilion, located north of the beach, functions as a community cultural centre, a theatre, gallery, rehearsal, meeting and function rooms, art workshop and studios. The Pavilion is also the centre for major festivals performances throughout the year.

It is 2 km from Bondi Junction, a mainly commercial area which is home to numerous retailers and professional services, many of which are located within the Westfield Bondi Junction one of the biggest shopping complexes in Sydney. Also in Bondi Junction are movie houses, restaurants and the local municipal library

 

Many doctors and other health professionals practice around the Bondi Beach area, with a number of private clinics, day procedure clinics retirement and nursing homes. Major public hospitals are also positioned within a few minutes of Bondi and include Prince of Wales and Royal Women's Hospitals at Randwick, St Vincent's Hospital in East Sydney and the War Memorial Hospital at Bondi Junction.

There are 3 primary schools and 2 high schools in the suburb. 2 of which are public. Many other schools are located in nearby suburbs such as Bondi and Bondi Junction.

Local sporting facilities include favourites like the Bondi Icebergs, the Hakoah Club and Bondi Golf Club..

 

Throughout the year, Bondi's beachfront is the scene of popular gatherings such as the Festival of the Winds (kite-flying), Christmas Day, New Years Eve, Australia Day and finish line of the annual City to Surf fun run. Hotels along Campbell Parade, Bondi Road and at Bondi Junction offer a range of live music and late night entertainment.

 

The area is easily accessed via road and the Syd Einfeld Drive, and is well serviced by local taxi companies. Bondi is accessed via frequent buses from the CBD and surrounding suburbs, and City Rail trains from the city which link with other suburban services at Central Station.

 

 

Industry and Employment

The majority of Bondi Beach residents are employed by the numerous café’s restaurants and bars surrounding the beach. Apart from hospitality many are employed in financial and legal services. Many of the local community are professionals who commute into the Sydney CBD

 

Population

The population of Bondi Beach at the time of the 2006 census was approximately 10370   .Current estimates are now over 12,000. The predominant age group in the town is 25-54 years.
