CLIFTON HILL, VIC, 3068

Location
Clifton Hill is a quiet, inner-city suburb of Melbourne, located just four kilometres for the Melbourne CBD in the City of Yarra.

History
Clifton Hill was named after Clifton Farm, which was one of the first properties in the area. The word “Hill” was added by land developer John Knipe, who went on to subdivide and auction off 64 freehold properties in September 1871.

Description
Clifton Hill is largely comprised of Victorian and Edwardian era dwellings. The infamous Hoodle Street, which was the site of the 1987 massacre that killed seven people and seriously injured 19 people, divides the suburb into western and eastern precincts. There are several parks and gardens located within the suburbs, including Darling Gardens and Mayor’s Park in the western precinct and Quarries Park in the east.

Facilities
Due to its close location to Melbourne, Clifton Hill is within close distance to a plethora of shops, eateries, restaurants, sporting facilities, education institutions, leisure centres, parks, gardens and museums.

Transport to and from Clifton Park is made easy via public and private transport with major roads including Queens Parade, Heidelberg Road, Alexandra Parade and Hoodle Street. Several bus routes run along Hoodle Street and interchange at Clifton Hill railway station. Tram route 86 running also runs along Queens Parade.

There are three primary schools located in within Clifton Hill (two state and one catholic) and the closest high school can be found in nearby Northcote. Surrounding suburbs offer a range of education options and universities such as Australian Catholic Universty, Monash University, University of Melbourne and RMIT University also have campuses located nearby.

Industry and Employment
In the 2006 Census, the most common industries of employment for persons aged 15 years and over usually resident in Clifton Hill were:
Hospitals- 6.9%
Tertiary Education- 6.6%
School Education- 4.6%
Legal and Accounting Services- 4.0%
Architectural, Engineering and Technical Services- 3.4%

Population
At the time of the 2006 Census, the population of Clifton Hills was 5,386 people with 49 per cent being males and 51 per cent were females. The median age of residents was 35 years, compared with the national median age of 37 years.
