Suburb of the Month DALYELLUP

Location

Dalyellup is an outer suburb of Bunbury, located along the city’s southern beaches. It is 180 km south of Perth.

Description

Dalyellup is a relatively new suburb and was established in 1999 as a joint venture between Slatterley Property Group and the Department of Housing and Works. The planned community has since developed into an established village with a family-friendly outlook and a relaxed atmosphere. Surrounded by coastal, foreshore and forest reserves, Dalyellup provides residents with affordable seaside living.

Facilities

A master-planned community, Dalyellup has a range of well-organized facilities for residents and as the suburb continues to grow it is expected that these facilities will also be further developed. There are two co-educational K-12 schools in the suburb, one a public school and the other a private Lutheran school. There is a playgroup for children and parents in the Dalyellup community centre, which is also the home of the local library, medical centre and music school. There is a small shopping strip in the suburb but as the centre of Bunbury is just a 7 minute drive away, residents of Dalyellup have easy access to the wide variety of commercial and retail facilities in the city.

Dalyellup is perhaps best known for its natural and recreational facilities. There are numerous lakes and walkways in the suburb and with 130 hectares of coastal reserve, 50 hectares of Tuart forest and 11 hectares of foreshore reserve there are endless opportunities for exercising or relaxing. The suburb also has facilities for water sports and fishing in addition to landscaped gardens and a family beach picnic park.

Industry and Employment

While Dalyellup offers some opportunities for employment in the local schools and facilities, Bunbury, the third largest city in Western Australia, is just a short commute away and offers a wide range of jobs. Many Dalyellup residents find employment either as professional and clerical workers in the city centre or as technicians and trades workers in the suburbs. As a whole, the median individual income for Dalyellup is well above average for the region.

Population

The population of Dalyellup has shown recent rapid growth. At the 2001 Census the suburb had 352 residents and as of the 2006 Census this figure had increased to 3,239.
