Description
As the northernmost city on the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston is sometimes known as "The Gateway to the Peninsula". Open, sandy beaches are found on the western side of Frankston. Due to its location, winters are slightly milder than in other suburbs and Frankston is usually around 2 °C cooler than Melbourne city in the summer months.
Facilities
Bayside Shopping Centre, the largest shopping complex on the Mornington Peninsula, is located in the Frankston central business district. Frankston boasts a sizable restaurant and bar, pub and nightclub scene. Four hospitals operate in the suburb of Frankston and service the greater area of the City of Frankston. Major theatre venues in Frankston include the Frankston Arts Centre, and the George Jenkins Theatre. Many sporting fields and some small stadiums exist in the suburb, most notably, the historic Frankston Park and the Frankston Basketball Stadium. There are three golf courses in Frankston; Frankston Golf Course, Centenary Park Golf Course and the Peninsula Country Club.
Industry and Employment
Frankston is a large retail and commercial shopping hub for both the Mornington Peninsula and the outer south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. A light industrial area is located along Dandenong Road centering around New Street. The industrial area also spills over into the neighbouring suburb of Seaford with some bulk retail and cash-and-carry outlets.

The 2006 Census found the population of Frankston to be 51,818. The most populous age range was between 25-54.
