Description
Maroochydore is centred around a large beach that lies at the mouth of the Maroochy River. It is one of the Sunshine Coast’s main commercial centres, with high-rise apartments that scatter the skyline and drive-in shopping centres. It is thought that the word Maroochy was derived from an Aboriginal expression describing the red bill of the Australian black swan.

Maroochydore is one of the Sunshine Coast’s main business centres, It is home to a wide variety of small shopping boutiques and restaurants, as well as some of the Sunshine Coast's largest shopping centres. Sunshine Plaza, the largest shopping centre in Maroochydore has a department store, two discount department stores, three supermarkets and over 200 specialty stores. Maroochydore also has a bulky goods shopping centre, a retirement village, two holiday/caravan villages, the Maroochydore multi-sports complex, a canal estate and the Sunshine Coast's first surf life-saving club. The suburb also has a range of education facilities, including a State primary and secondary schools, a Catholic primary school and a TAFE.
Industry and Employment
Despite its holiday image, 80% of Maroochydore's population is permanent. Of these residents who are employed many find work servicing Maroochydore’s large tourist intake, with 9.4% employed in the accommodation and restaurant sector. Many Maroochydore residents are professionals who work locally and service the surrounding areas. About 12% of Maroochydore residents work as technicians and labourers.
Population
The population of Maroochydore at the time of the 2006 census was just over 13,707. The predominant age group in the town is 25-54 years. Current estimates put that figure at over 14,000. The majority of households or about 55% are made up of couples without children.
