Location: Mawson Lakes, South Australia, 5095

Mawson Lakes is a fast growing development in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. A primarily residential suburb, it is located just 12 km north of the Adelaide CBD and is barely a ten minute drive from the north-west beaches.

Description

Mawson Lakes was previously a non-residential suburb known as The Levels, before plans were made to convert the area into a Multifunction Polis – a futuristic village. When these plans stalled, Delfin Land Lease took over the suburb’s development and transformed the area into a modern, vibrant mix of residential, commercial and recreational facilities. Though Mawson Lakes is still under development, the 600 hectare community has been fully planned and is regarded as a prestigious, well-educated suburb.

Facilities

The commercial centre of Mawson Lakes, along with the Promenade town centre, features a wide variety of retail stores, supermarkets, offices, cafes and restaurants. The recreational facilities in this area are supplemented by the various parks, walking trails, lakes and waterways which wind their way through the suburb. In fact, 30% of Mawson Lakes is dedicated to natural, open spaces, including the Sir Douglas Mawson lake, the largest lake in the north of Adelaide and a number of playgrounds, Japanese gardens, and sporting facilities.

There are two local schools – the public, primary Mawson Lakes School, and the private, secondary Endeavour College – in addition to a wider variety of schools in the surrounding region. The area also features a number of childcare facilities, adult education classes at the Mawson centre and the Mawson Lakes Campus of the University of South Australia.  Also at the Mawson centre is a computer barn, as well as a library and resource centre.

Additionally, there is an aged care centre, a retirement village, a community health service and a medical centre in the suburb, as well as the nearby Modbury hospital. The Mawson interchange, expected to soon become one of Adelaide’s busiest stations, services the suburb with buses and trains.

Industry and Employment

Mawson Lakes is situated right next to Technology Park Adelaide, Australia’s first technology park, which provides residents with a wide range of employment opportunities. A significant number of local workers are in the manufacturing industry with many employed as managers, technicians and trades workers. With the proximity of the local campus of the University of South Australia, a number of residents work in the education sector and almost half the population holds a degree, diploma or vocational qualification.  Also, with the short drive to the CBD, in addition to the regular trains, many workers commute to the centre of Adelaide for professional employment.
