Suburb of the month Perth CBD

Suburb of the Month: Perth

Location

Perth is the capital of Western Australia, and is located upon the Swan River in the south-west of the state.

Description

Perth's CBD is the cultural, administrative, and commercial capital of Western Australia, as well as its largest city. Perth is recognised as one of the most isolated metropolitan areas on the planet, with the nearest major city (Adelaide) being located over 2,000 kilometres away.

Facilities

As the business centre of a major city, Perth has countless facilities in the form of shopping centres, restaurants, hospitals and sporting facilities. Kings Park, a 4 square kilometre park at the western edge of the CBD, provides numerous recreational opportunities for residents, while the suburb also includes a number of other parks and reserves such as Langley Park.

The Royal Perth Hospital is located in the Perth CBD, as is the Perth Cultural Centre, which includes the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Western Australian Museum. Sporting facilities in the suburb include Perth Oval, tennis courts, and the Perth Arena, an indoor stadium currently under construction which, once completed, will host indoor sports such as basketball.

Industry and Employment

Perth serves as the economic hub of Western Australia, with many national and international companies being located in the city, such as BHP Billiton and Bankwest. As a result, the majority of residents find employment in white collar positions, particularly in the resources and services industries, within the CBD and its surrounding suburbs.

Population

The population of Perth according to the 2006 census was 6,051, with the dominant age group in the suburb being 20 - 29 years old.

Housing Market

Of the 1271 dwellings in the Perth CBD 55% are units, and over half of all dwellings are rented. 43% of households in Perth consist of single parent families, while 22% are made up of childless couples and 21% are lone households.
