Description
Port Douglas is one of the oldest settlements in North Queensland. With the construction of the Mulligan Highway it once serviced many surrounding towns in the region during the gold boom. In the 1970’s it re emerged as tourist destination, culminating with the construction of the world class Sheraton Mirage in the 1980s. It has persisted as a popular holiday destination, with many tourists attracted to its long white beaches and proximity to the world Heritage sites of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.
Facilities
The main retail area in Port Douglas is centred around Macrossan St, where facilities include restaurants, convenience stores, arts and crafts and designer boutique stores. In addition markets function every Sunday giving Port Douglas residents a great range of shopping options. The nearby town of Mossman also services Port Douglas residents with its range of restaurants and shopping facilities as well as a hospital
Port Douglas and Northern Queensland are to a variety of primary and secondary schools and English language schools. In nearby Cairns you will also find the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE and the James Cook University.
Many of the facilities in the town, and the surrounding area, are tourist-oriented, with a number of five star resorts, holiday rentals and golf courses in the vicinity. Numerous companies run daily trips from the marina to the outer reef and Low Isles for scuba diving and snorkelling.
There are two significant festival periods. The first is toward the end of May, when the Port Douglas Carnivale which runs for 10 days is held, attracting over 10,000 visitors. The second is towards October with the Troppo Arts and Footprints Music festivals.
Industry and Employment
The majority of Port Douglas residents are employed by the thriving tourist industry, working primarily in accommodation and physical recreation. There are also a significant number of technicians and trades workers living in the area, many of whom are employed by the nearby local resorts. The local cafes and restaurants also provide a number of employment opportunities.

The population of Port Douglas at the time of the 2006 census was just over 3000. The predominant age group in the town is 25-54 years.
